    Backpacks for toddlers & preschoolers

Since your little one isn't carrying heavy books or homework, opt for something small and lightweight. There should be enough room for lunch, snacks, and a favorite toy. Go for something playful – there are so many adorable options for the pre-school set.

    Backpacks for kids

Bigger kids need a backpack that's big enough for notebooks and supplies, but still right-sized for little bodies. Themed backpacks are popular with the grade school set, allowing them to proudly display their favorite characters and themes – from Hello Kitty and Tinker Bell to Power Rangers and Sponge Bob.

    Backpacks for tweens

By the time kids reach middle school or junior high, they're used to carrying backpacks for school, as well as for sports, after-school activities and sleepovers. At this age, the backpack they carry is emblematic of their personal style. Be sure to choose a backpack that's sturdy, secure with pockets and compartments for easy organization.

    Backpacks for teens

Teens tend to haul lots of stuff wherever they go. That means comfort, size and design are especially important features. Look for streamlined designs with gel-filled shoulder straps, special laptop and cooler pockets, and a top compartment for MP3 players and smart phones. For older teens and the college-bound, durable laptop backpacks or sleek, colorful neoprene tablet sleeves are popular options.

    Quick Tips - Backpack Safety

    • Choose a lightweight backpack that doesn't add too much to your child's load.
    • Pick the right size - should cover no more than 3/4 of the length of child's back.
    • Load backpacks carefully - place heaviest items in the back.
    • Make sure they use both straps to avoid strain on one side of the upper body.
