Carry a tackle box around your neck
Trout anglers figured this out ages ago: Why weigh yourself down when all you want to do is blitz a local creek? Bass busters can do the same. Turbocharge a flyfishing lanyard with the items listed below, and you can work your way around a pond unencumbered.
Start with a neck lanyard with at least five disconnects.
If your lanyard comes preloaded with floatant holder, small nippers, or other trout-specific tools, remove them. Then load it up with the following essentials.
PLIERS Look for the lightest fishing pliers you can find. Some models even float (1).
FILE A short hook file. Yes, you need one (2).
SPINNERS AND JIGS Stuff a small fly box with a few spinners and jigs and whatever else you might need once you're on the pond (3).
SCISSORS Super braid scissors will cut heavy gel-spun and superbraid lines (4).
MULTITOOL Look for a small multitool that can do business as a mono clipper, a screwdriver, and a bird's-nest detangling aid (5).
