Decorating Your House for Halloween

As the leaves start to turn and Halloween draws near, great decorations can help get you into the spirit of the spookiest season. Whether you dress up your house for trick-or-treaters or create a haunted house for a party, the right Halloween decorations can make or break the event.

Selecting outdoor Halloween decorations

For outdoor Halloween decorations, string lights and decorations set a fun, festive atmosphere and keep your yard bright during this most mischievous of holidays. LED decorations, which use long-lasting, low-heat bulbs, are a safe and exciting way to add an eerie glow to your windows or the bushes. Green and orange lights can create an otherworldly effect that will delight trick-or-treaters.

Turn the front of your home into the creepy exterior of a haunted house or simply add Halloween-themed details. Decorate it with items that make an impact, like Halloween door panels or inflatable ghosts and monsters. With a few fake tombstones and plastic skeletons, your yard becomes a scary cemetery. Add fake spider webs to the corners of your porch railing and use a musical doorknocker to spookily welcome your guests.

Whether you're creating a creepy decor theme or going for a more autumnal Halloween look, pumpkins are a must-have decorating element. If you're short on time, use glow-in-the-dark paint to create glowing, ghostly jack-o'-lanterns. Pumpkin-carving kits make it easy to carve ghoulish designs into your pumpkins for a traditional Halloween atmosphere on your front steps or walkway. Add candles to create a flickering glow.

Find great Halloween decorations for indoors

When shopping for indoor Halloween decor, first decide if you want scary decorations or something a little tamer. While adults and teens might get a kick out of sensor-activated vampires and zombies, the little ones may react differently.

Fake spider webs are relatively inexpensive and easy to put up just about anywhere. Drape the webs over doorways, around railings, or above a fireplace. Design your own centerpiece by arranging spider webs around plastic or glass goblets and bottles of fake blood.

While carved pumpkins burn bright outside most homes on Halloween, it's easy to transform them into indoor decorations. Instead of carving them, paint the pumpkins with chalkboard paint or acrylic paint. White and black paint combined with a few craft decorations transform your pumpkin into a restless ghost. Green and brown paint can make a cackling witch's face.

And don't forget to hang bewitching window decorations to give trick-or-treaters a preview of what's inside.
